Winter Olympic Games of 2010 are coming soon to British Columbia, and in the upcoming pre-Olympic winter season Whistler has a lot of things going on! As if this sport buzz was not enough, the grand opening of the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola is scheduled to take place in December 2008.
The plan involves a great deal of engineering art and great amount of care to make the new gondolas safe and famous. Why famous? First of all, it will hold three world records for the lift of its kind: world’s longest unsupported (free) span, world’s highest lift, world’s longest continuous lift system. Second, the visitors of Whistler, tourists, skiers and snowboarders have been waiting for this construction to start for years, and the implications of it are no less grand than the plan itself. The connection of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains would finally allow skiers and snowboards to change snow trails without having to go downhill…
Not that anyone minds it, of course! However, starting in December, every guest of the resort would be able to enjoy the wonderful slopes with minimal disruptions, as it will take only eleven minutes to cross from one peak to another while enjoying the fantastic views of the Rockies.
At 11 am on Friday, December 12, twelve PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola Sky Cabins finally made the very first, epic journey across the 4.4 kilometers/ 2.73 miles span between Blackcomb and Whistler mountains! It definitely is a historic moment before the Winter Games start in 2010.
